The purpose of this workshop is to talk about topics that are not taught in graduate school, and are seldom discussed between colleagues. Despite this gap in our training, it is critical that clinicians have the ability to recognize, acknowledge, and confront difficult topics that often challenge our ability to practice ethically. For example, how should we handle sexual feelings in psychotherapy, feelings of boredom, or mistakes that we make? These questions and many others are the basis of the book What Therapists Don’t Talk About and Why: Understanding Taboos That Hurt Us and Our Clients by Ken Pope, Janet Sonne, and Beverly Greene (American Psychological Association, 2006). Although there is not a single “right” answer to these questions, this workshop will provide an awareness of the complex situations that arise in everyday practice, and the need for openness, honesty and courage in responding to them. Many vignettes and scenarios will be presented for discussion.
Workshop Objectives
Participants will be able to:
- Recognize issues that make them anxious, confused, or uncomfortable;
- Avoid justifications of unethical behavior;
- Develop strategies for responding to complex ethical and clinical situations.
